The Roman site of Birdoswald (pictured above) is a short drive away. There, you can see remains of the Roman frontier system within the fort and surroundings. The east gateway is said to be the best preserved along the line of the Wall. Vindolanda and Housesteads roman forts are also all within easy reach by car.
Gretna Green also within a half hours drive, is one of the world's most famous wedding venues, with its stories of romance, scandals, and illicit trysts. For centuries, young lovers have made for Gretna Green, where they can wed in a hurry under Scotland's lenient marriage laws.
Only ten minutes from the inn is Talkin Tarn, a local lake of great natural beauty. Great for a stroll or hiring a boat. Facilities include toilets, tearoom and children's play area.
Lanercost Priory, a spectacular historic and living church dating from 1166, is only a short drive away. Today it serves as both a parish church and also a venue for music and craft events.
